Situated some 40 kms between Cannes and
St. Tropez on the Cote D'Azur, Frejus, as a holiday choice, presents
the visitor with all the attractions of sun, sea and sand together
with the irresistible combination of small Provencal townlife
and
the historical and architectural legacy of the early Roman Empire.
Frejus (Population: 41486) is located one
mile inland at the mouth of the River Argens on a site which
was chosen by Julius Caesar in 49 B.C. as his first naval base
in France. This rich Roman heritage is evident throughout the
town which proudly conserves the remains of the large Aqueduct,
the Theatre and the Arena which today presents more modern entertainments,
e.g. Bullfights, Concerts and other spectacles.
The
focal point of the town is the historic Cathedral square with
its famous mosaic domed Gothic Cathedral, housing a 12th century
octagonal Baptistry and picturesque 12th century Cloisters. This
pedestrianised square, with its charming Micocoulier trees and
outdoor restaurants, plays host to a lively market of fresh produce
and local crafts twice a week on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
Our
holiday apartment overlooks this fine square in a converted townhouse
which, though modernised to a high standard, retains many of
the original features of Provencal town living. Access to the
flat is via a main door and leading off a steep quarry-tiled
staircase which serves the building.
